Game Introduction

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a role-playing game developed by Jam City and released in 2018 for mobile devices. It is based on the popular Harry Potter book and film series, allowing players to enroll as students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

As fans of the series know, Hogwarts is where young witches and wizards are trained in magical arts and discover more about their powers. In the game, you create your own student avatar that gets sorted into one of the four iconic schoolhouses – Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. Your avatar attends magical classes like Charms, Potions and Transfiguration while building relationships with other students and characters from the books.

The game is set in the mid-1980s, several years before Harry Potter himself joins the school. During this time period, Hogwarts was threatened by sinister curses that endanger students. As a new student, you quickly get caught up in the mysterious happenings, joining up with your sibling who attends Hogwarts as well to investigate. Your choices determine what house you get sorted into and shape your avatar’s magical skills and friendships.

Generally speaking, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery provides an engaging role-playing experience for fans, letting you immerse in the magical world through new storylines. Like the books and films, the mysteries and relationships give the game strong appeal.

Game Review

After playing Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery extensively, I found it an entertaining mobile role-playing game that lives up to the rich world created in the books and movies. As a fan of the Harry Potter series, I really appreciated being able to immerse in the magical universe through an original character and new storylines.

The sorting ceremony and initial magical classes like Charms brought the novelty of discovering my own Hogwarts house, abilities, and relationships. I enjoyed the main mystery involving curses and secrets hidden inside Hogwarts’ hallowed halls. Side quests with students and teachers added depth beyond just the main story. My avatar grew her skills in areas like Transfiguration and Potions through reasonably challenging mini games.

Character interactions stood out as well. As I built relationships with the iconic game figures like Nearly Headless Nick, Hagrid, Dumbledore and more, I felt invested in the world. These canon characters acted as mentors at times or sources of intel related to the overarching mysteries. Supporting student characters also became friends (or rivals) depending on my choices during adventures.

I will admit the energy limits for tasks proved occasionally frustrating — forcing me to take breaks when I wanted to keep playing. The graphics and animations also felt dated at times. However, regular special events and updates added enough new story content to keep me coming back.

Generally speaking, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery excelled at letting a Potterhead like myself lose hours tapping to unearth school secrets, master spells, and forge alliances and rivalries with both familiar and new faces. I’d definitely recommend to fans, especially to hold you over until the next big console or movie release.
